Son p\u00e8re, instituteur originaire de la Meuse, l\u2019encourage dans ses apprentissages. Elle est attir\u00e9e par la m\u00e9decine et entame des \u00e9tudes \u00e0 Paris \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 18\u00a0ans. En 1899, elle r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 int\u00e9grer l\u2019externat des H\u00f4pitaux de Paris.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, elle \u00e9pouse Andr\u00e9 Girard et d\u00e9cide d\u2019abandonner ses \u00e9tudes. Ils ont un fils, \u00c9tienne. Au d\u00e9part, Nicole semble donc avoir choisi une voie traditionnelle\u00a0: celle de femme au foyer. Mais apr\u00e8s son divorce en 1903, elle revient \u00e0 la m\u00e9decine, son premier amour, inconditionnel et infini. En 1909, elle pr\u00e9sente sa th\u00e8se sur les poisons canc\u00e9reux et parvient \u00e0 se faire une place dans une profession domin\u00e9e par un cercle d\u2019hommes. Elle donne des cours \u00e0 la Sorbonne et repr\u00e9sente la France au Congr\u00e8s international de Vienne en 1910 (\u00ab\u00a0seul point blanc dans la masse de redingotes noires\u00a0\u00bb, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dixit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> l\u2019auteure de sa biographie r\u00e9cente, C\u00e9cile Chabaud).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jusque-l\u00e0, le destin de Nicole Girard-Mangin sort de l\u2019ordinaire. Une femme divorc\u00e9e, une femme m\u00e9decin. Une modernit\u00e9 incroyable pour l\u2019\u00e9poque\u2009!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Son histoire ne s\u2019arr\u00eate pas l\u00e0 va\u2009! Apr\u00e8s la d\u00e9claration de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, elle re\u00e7oit une lettre\u00a0: le \u00ab\u00a0docteur Girard Mangin\u00a0\u00bb est mobilis\u00e9. Il ne fait aucun doute que l\u2019administration imagine un homme. Nicole enfonce la porte et r\u00e9pond \u00e0 l\u2019appel. Sa pr\u00e9sence suscite de nombreux remous, mais l\u2019afflux des bless\u00e9s la rend indispensable. Plusieurs indices r\u00e9v\u00e8lent la misogynie ambiante\u00a0: l\u2019arm\u00e9e n\u2019a pas pr\u00e9vu d\u2019uniforme pour elle et lui trouve un uniforme de m\u00e9decin f\u00e9minin britannique\u2009; de ses sup\u00e9rieurs envoient r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement des lettres pour demander son d\u00e9part (dans le contexte de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, ce z\u00e8le sexiste impressionne\u2009!)\u2009; enfin, elle est r\u00e9mun\u00e9r\u00e9e comme une infirmi\u00e8re et n\u2019obtiendra le titre de m\u00e9decin-major qu\u2019en 1916\u2009!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comme les autres soldats, Nicole subit les conditions extr\u00eamement difficiles du front\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Chirurgie sans arr\u00eat, de jour comme de nuit, pendant des semaines, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que l\u2019on tombe, \u00e0 bout de forces, sur un brancard pour dormir un peu\u00a0\u00bb, t\u00e9moigne-t-elle dans des lettres \u00e0 ses proches.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entre 1914 et 1916, elle est affect\u00e9e \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents secteurs du front o\u00f9 elle est bless\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019oreille par des \u00e9clats d\u2019obus. De son vivant, sa seule v\u00e9ritable reconnaissance lui vient des soldats, des poilus, qui la remercient pour ses soins en lui d\u00e9diant une plaque comm\u00e9morative.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 1916, apr\u00e8s avoir obtenu le titre de m\u00e9decin-major, elle est envoy\u00e9e \u00e0 Paris, pour diriger l\u2019h\u00f4pital Edith Cavell. Elle y forme des infirmi\u00e8res destin\u00e9es \u00e0 \u00eatre envoy\u00e9es au front. \u00c0 la fin des conflits, elle retourne \u00e0 la vie civile sans honneur ni d\u00e9coration de la part de l\u2019arm\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elle s\u2019engage alors au sein de la Croix-Rouge et donne r\u00e9guli\u00e8re des conf\u00e9rences pour pr\u00e9senter le r\u00f4le des femmes lors de la Grande Guerre. Elle milite pour les droits des femmes et leur \u00e9ducation \u00e0 travers l\u2019<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Union des femmes de France.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elle participe \u00e9galement \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de la <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ligue contre le cancer,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sujet en rapport avec sa th\u00e8se et ses recherches.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alors qu\u2019elle pr\u00e9pare une tourn\u00e9e mondiale pour pr\u00e9senter ses recherches et la Ligue, elle est retrouv\u00e9e morte chez elle en juin 1919. Des fioles et des bo\u00eetes de m\u00e9dicaments vides se trouvent au pied de son lit. En 2021, elle re\u00e7oit \u00e0 titre posthume la m\u00e9daille d\u2019honneur du Service des Arm\u00e9es. En 2022, elle re\u00e7oit \u00e0 titre posthume la m\u00e9daille comm\u00e9morative de la bataille de Verdun d\u00e9cern\u00e9e par la ville.
