Catherine Jos\u00e9phine Conrad na\u00eet dans la vall\u00e9e du Rhin, dans le nord-est de la France, en 1942. Elle rencontre son futur mari Maurice Krafft en 1966 \u00e0 l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universit\u00e9 de Strasbourg. Le couple est fusionnel. Elle est chimiste, il est g\u00e9ologue ; tous deux vont arpenter les volcans du monde entier.<\/span><\/p><h5><b>Une volcanologue avant-gardiste \u00e0 qui l<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><b>on doit une grande partie des connaissances actuelles sur les volcans<\/b><\/h5><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dans les ann\u00e9es 60, l\u2019\u00e9tat des connaissances sur la volcanologie et la tectonique des plaques [1]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> est plut\u00f4t maigre. Les d\u00e9couvertes de Katia et Maurice Krafft vont permettre de grandes avanc\u00e9es notamment au niveau de la pr\u00e9vention des risques et de la vulgarisation des connaissances. Le couple adopte, par exemple, une classification des volcans actifs qui distingue deux types. Les volcans \u00ab\u00a0rouges\u00a0\u00bb effusifs, caract\u00e9ris\u00e9s par de longues coul\u00e9es de lave. Ce sont eux que les Krafft ont d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abord \u00e9tudi\u00e9s. Et les volcans \u00ab\u00a0gris\u00a0\u00bb explosifs, beaucoup plus dangereux car moins pr\u00e9visibles, dont l\u2019\u00e9ruption se fait sous forme de nu\u00e9e ardente. Le couple va finalement concentrer ses recherches sur le second type jusqu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">au jour fatidique de leur mort le 3 juin 1991, au Japon, sur le mont Unzen, leur poste d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">observation se trouvant trop pr\u00e8s de l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explosion. Des marques au sol indiquent qu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ils se trouvaient c\u00f4te \u00e0 c\u00f4te [2]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katia est la seule femme volcanologue \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque \u00e0 \u00e9tudier les volcans actifs in situ. Elle et son mari filment toutes les explosions auxquelles ils assistent et effectuent des pr\u00e9l\u00e8vements (roches et gaz) qui permettront aux scientifiques de mod\u00e9liser le comportement des volcans. Leur travail aura \u00e9galement pour but d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alerter les gouvernements sur les dangers encourus par les populations vivant aux abords des volcans. C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">est par exemple gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur travail de sensibilisation que le gouvernement philippin consid\u00e8re s\u00e9rieusement l\u2019\u00e9ruption du Pinatubo en 1991.<\/span><\/p><h5><b>Une fascination sans limite pour \u00ab\u00a0les entrailles de la terre\u00a0\u00bb<\/b><\/h5><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katia est subjugu\u00e9e par les volcans. Elle s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">en amuse\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0si l\u2019on pouvait manger du basalte ou des roches volcaniques et les dig\u00e9rer, on resterait au sommet des volcans toute l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ann\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb. Son \u00e9merveillement, elle l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explique avec ces mots\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0une fois que vous avez vu une \u00e9ruption, vous ne pouvez plus vous en passer parce que c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">est tellement grandiose, tellement fort.\u00a0\u00bb Et \u00e9videmment, on comprend. La Terre qui s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ouvre, le spectacle dantesque des coul\u00e9es br\u00fblantes et visqueuses, les tr\u00e9fonds qui remontent, la solitude privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e\u2026 L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">esth\u00e9tique, l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imaginaire all\u00e9gorique et la dangerosit\u00e9 des \u00e9ruptions fascinent. On a retrouv\u00e9 par exemple des repr\u00e9sentations d\u2019\u00e9ruptions dans la grotte Chauvet datant de 36 000 avant JC [3]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 On sait aussi que les volcans \u00e9taient consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme des entit\u00e9s sacr\u00e9es dans la cosmogonie pr\u00e9colombienne, qu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">en l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an 79, Pline l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ancien meurt lui aussi dans une \u00e9ruption, celle du V\u00e9suve qu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">il souhaitait observer de pr\u00e8s etc. Avec le sentiment profond, certainement, de \u00ab\u00a0quelque chose qui d\u00e9passe l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entendement.\u00a0\u00bb (Maurice Krafft). Katia ne disait pas autre chose\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">est comme \u00eatre dans les entrailles de la Terre. Et compar\u00e9 \u00e0 ces volcans g\u00e9ants, on n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">est vraiment rien. \u00bb [4]<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aujourd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hui encore, l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activit\u00e9 secr\u00e8te de la Terre continue d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impressionner chercheurs et n\u00e9ophytes. De nombreuses volcanologues actuelles se disent inspir\u00e9es par l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avant-gardisme de Katia Krafft. C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">est le cas de Rebecca Williams, volcanologue \u00e0 l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universit\u00e9 de Hull en Angleterre et co-auteure d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">une analyse sur la diversit\u00e9 au sein de la discipline [5]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Elle d\u00e9plore toutefois les freins auxquels sont soumises les femmes : \u00ab on ne leur confie pas de conf\u00e9rences. On ne leur d\u00e9cerne pas de r\u00e9compenses. \u00bb La renomm\u00e9e de Katia Krafft fait figure d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exception.
